Statement - RCS in the regions

The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) is changing the way it provides support to the profession across the UK. Over the last 18 months, we have enhanced our regional activities with a comprehensive programme of events, workshops, and networking opportunities throughout the UK. With the redevelopment of the RCS London buildings, we have increased our local partner education centres throughout the UK including the launch of a major surgical skills centre based at the University of Manchester. 

We have also carried out a review of our support in the regions and have established two outreach hubs to support our regional activities in England. These teams will replace the existing staff based in each region. One hub,  covering the North and The Midlands is to be located at the University of Manchester alongside our new education centre, with a second hub in London (at the RCS main office) to cover activity in London and the South as well as leading the coordination of regional governance.

The outreach teams will continue to support the regional governance infrastructure of the RCS, which supports and delivers the professional agenda of the RCS for all stages of a surgeon’s professional life. This includes the Regional Directors, Regional Specialty Professional Advisors (RSPAs), Surgical Tutors and the associated Regional Boards and Regional Committee. In Wales and Northern Ireland, this includes the delivery of the RCS’ policy and public affairs agenda.
