Kenneth Ray, former FDS Dean, passes away

08 Aug 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Mr Kenneth Richard Ray OBE, FDSRCS, FRCS, a former Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mr Ray was the 16th Dean of the Faculty and served as Dean from 1992 to 1995. He later served as Chairman of the Joint Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry (JCSTD) from 1996 to 1998.

Mr John Llewellyn Williams CBE, who succeeded Mr Ray as Dean of the FDS from 1995 to 1998, said: “Ken Ray was well known throughout the profession having been a member of the Council of BAOMS from 1976 and President in 1985. Within the College he was notable for his strong Medico-Political background, having Chaired CCHDS and through this becoming involved with the BMA’s main consultant Committees.

“With this background he served the Faculty and Council of the RCS with a very broad view of the climate of the NHS and how the College fitted in as an important clinical influence on the Government of the day.

“He was a very positive leader and as Dean, served his profession and the College extremely well.”

Mr Ray’s funeral will take place on 22 August in Macclesfield and any former colleagues who wish to attend would be welcome. Please contact fds@rcseng.ac.uk for more details.
