JCST: ISCP Surgical Director position

11 Jun 2024

On behalf of the four Surgical Royal Colleges of the UK and Ireland, we are seeking to appoint one exceptional individual to lead key areas of the Joint Committee on Surgical Training’s (JCST) work under the overall direction of the JCST Chair.

Developed and overseen by the JCST, its Specialty Advisory Committees (SACs), Training Interface Groups (TIGs) and Core Surgical Training Advisory Committee (CSTAC), the ISCP has been fully operational since 2007. It is a living curriculum, the content of which must keep pace with changes in practice in individual specialties and in surgical training as a whole. The JCST also strive to respond to feedback and to improve its user-friendliness for both trainees and trainers, and other users. We continue to work on a rolling programme of further development.

All of this takes place within the framework established by the regulator, the General Medical Council (GMC), which approves all postgraduate training curricula and monitors changes on a regular basis. The 2021 surgical curricula follow the GMC’s “Excellence by Design” for the development and design of postgraduate medical curricula, and incorporate the Generic Professional Capabilities (GPCs) Framework, and are now outcomes-based.

About the role

The Surgical Director will provide clinical leadership for the ISCP, act as a champion in increasing familiarity among both trainees and trainers, and work to foster and promote excellence in surgical education and training. They will be responsible for and lead on future changes and iterations of the surgical syllabi and curricula.

Applicants should be practising consultant surgeons with recent experience of managing and delivering surgical training, extensive familiarity with the ISCP and experience of chairing or leading a relevant regional or national training committee. Excellent leadership, management and interpersonal skills will be essential.

The JCST will reimburse the successful applicant’s Trust/Health Board for two PAs per week. The official term of office will begin on 1 November 2024.

How to apply

Job description, person specifications and application form for this role are available from Susana Cipriano, Head of JCST (scipriano@jcst.org). Mr Keith Jones, the current ISCP Surgical Director, and Dr Maria Bussey, Head of ISCP, will also be available to discuss the role and can be contacted via the JCST secretariat.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 17 July. Interviews will be held online via MS Teams on Thursday 1 August (pm).
