Statement on events in Gaza, Israel and the Middle East

16 Oct 2023

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is deeply distressed by the ongoing violence in Gaza, Israel and the Middle East and the resulting humanitarian crisis, which is affecting civilians on all sides. The tragic loss of life, including children, is heartbreaking.

Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and dedicated medical colleagues caring for those injured during conflict, and maintaining services, under such difficult circumstances.

Should any of our members and fellows wish to explore ways in which they can support humanitarian efforts in the region, we would point them to the following:

British Red Cross
Save the Children

We recognise that the conflict also has a knock-on on impact for our members in the UK. The Royal College of Surgeons of England offers confidential support and advice from a trained counsellor. If you feel in any way impacted by these events, please do consider calling the helpline on 0800 028 0199.  Advice is available 24/7, and you can find out more here.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is supporting the World Health Organization’s call for the protection of health facilities, health workers, patients and civilians as the conflict in Gaza unfolds.
