RCS England members and fellows recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

The King has recognised a number of members and fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in his birthday honours. They include Council member and Trustee Professor Andrew Carr FRCS FMedSci, who has been awarded a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to Orthopaedic Research and Training.
Professor Carr is currently the Nuffield Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and a fellow of Worcester College at the University of Oxford. On receiving the MBE, Professor Carr said:
"It was a huge surprise to receive this award. It recognises the work of many colleagues, collaborators and students who have been very supportive throughout my career. I am enormously appreciative to them all. I am especially pleased that orthopaedic research has been recognised and am grateful for the commitment and support of patients and funders.”
Responding to the news of Professor Carr’s honour, Mr Tim Mitchell, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, said:
“Andy’s well-deserved recognition in the King’s Birthday Honours has been celebrated by all at the College. His pioneering work, focusing on patient outcomes and surgical clinical trials in the UK, has been fundamental to research, training and improving patient care.”
Professor Carr trained in Bristol, Sheffield, Oxford, Seattle and Melbourne. He established the shoulder surgery service in Oxford and is past President of the British Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Society (BESS).

Professor Iain S Whitaker, Chair in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Swansea University; Director, The Reconstructive Surgery & Regenerative Medicine Research Centre; Honorary Consultant Plastic Surgeon, The Welsh Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery & Surgical Specialty Lead, Health & Care Research Wales, for Services to Surgery.
Catharina Adriana Maria Van Doorn, Head of Congenital Cardiac Surgery and Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. For services to children’s heart surgery and to charity.
Professor Noor Ul Owase Jeelani, Professor of Paediatric Neurosurgery, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. For services to neurosurgery and global child health.
