The first female professor of surgery in the United Kingdom, Professor Averil Mansfield, has been made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the first King’s Birthday Honours. Dame Averil receives her honour for services to Surgery and to Equality in Medicine. Professor Mansfield is a past Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Former Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) President, Professor Derek Alderson, has been recognised in the first King’s Birthday Honours since King Charles III ascended to the throne last year. Professor Alderson has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to Surgery.

Eight elective surgical hubs have been awarded accreditation as part of a pilot scheme to ensure the highest standards in clinical and operational practice. The scheme is run by NHS England’s Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

This week the BMA’s UK Junior Doctors Committee announced the result of their ballot on junior doctor industrial action in England. Almost 37,000 votes were cast and 98% of those voted in favour of industrial action. The Royal College of Surgeons of England, together with other surgical organisations, has said it supports the decision taken by junior doctors.
