    18 May 2023 The Royal College of Surgeons of England is disappointed waiting times in Wales have ticked upwards in March this year following a number of months of declines. New figures show NHS waiting lists in Wales increased to 734,721 in March 2023.

    27 Apr 2023 Responding to the budget announcement delivered today by the Secretary of State Chris Heaton Harris, Mr Mark Taylor, Director in Northern Ireland for the Royal College of Surgeons of England said: “Health has been given the same £7.3 billion budget as last year, but the Department of Health (DOH) has already indicated they need £7.8 billion, which is a very concerning £500 million shortfall. “For those keen on reducing the waiting lists this is extremely disappointing. Coupled with sustained political uncertainty this is bad news for those who want to plan sustainably for the future."

  • Response to Care Quality Commission (CQC) ‘Smiling Matters oral health in care homes - Progress report’

    20 Mar 2023 Responding to the report’s findings, Mr Matthew Garrett, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, said: “We welcome this important progress report on Smiling Matters and congratulate the CQC on galvanising action on oral health within care homes. It is encouraging that despite the pandemic, care homes have shown improvements in almost all areas and have become more aware of NICE oral health guidelines. This means more people are having their oral health assessed and reviewed."

  • Surgeons: NHS workforce plan must be backed up by numbers

    09 Mar 2023 Professor Fiona Myint, Vice President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, has warned that continuing to reduce the backlog of over 7.21 million patients waiting for treatment will be “difficult and slow”, unless the government publishes a workforce plan for the NHS that is fully funded and outlines the number of staff needed in the future, as promised.
