New analysis by the Faculty of Dental Surgery (FDS) at The Royal College of Surgeons has found that approximately 80% of children between the age of one and two didn’t visit an NHS dentist in the 12 months leading up to March 31st 2017, despite guidance saying children should start dental check-ups when they develop their first tooth.

A new analysis of waiting times data by the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) has found that in March 2017 the number of patients waiting more than six months (26 weeks) for treatment was 126,188 – a rise of 180% in four years. In March 2013, the year when six month waiters were at their lowest level, 45,054 patients were waiting more than six months for treatment.

The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) has today (31 May) launched a Postgraduate Certificate in Surgery. The new nationally recognised qualification has been developed by experienced surgeons across specialties.

The Royal College of Surgeons has responded to news breast surgeon Ian Paterson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Paterson was convicted over carrying out unnecessary cancer operations on nine women and one man however there were hundreds of other victims. He was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three of unlawful wounding.

The RCS has issued a statement ahead of the sentencing of breast surgeon Ian Paterson. On 17 May, the RCS issued an open letter which sought to reassure the public that rogue doctors should be more easily caught by modern rules governing medical practice – which includes annual appraisals as part of a doctor’s revalidation and rules around team decision-making and patient consent.

New data published today for January-March 2017 shows overnight hospital bed occupancy has hit a record high. NHS England’s data shows that 91.4% of overnight hospital (‘general and acute’) beds, where surgical patients who need to stay in hospital are cared for, were full during the period.

Bowel Cancer UK, in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of England, announce £500,000 funding for bowel cancer surgical research to establish the UK’s first Colorectal Cancer Surgical Research Chair and establish a network of Bowel Cancer UK Colorectal Cancer Surgical Research Fellows.

Following Ian Paterson’s abhorrent actions, the President and Vice-Presidents of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) have issued an open letter today reassuring the public that rogue doctors should now be caught by modern rules governing medical practice. However, they warn there is no room for complacency and the RCS today calls for a review by the next Government of how safety standards and transparency can improve, particularly in the private sector.

Knee arthroscopy should not be performed in almost all patients with degenerative knee disease, say a panel of international experts in The BMJ today. The experts say that the surgery does not, on average, result in a lasting improvement in pain or function - and they say further research is unlikely to alter this advice.

NHS England performance data published today for March 2017 shows the number of delayed days for transfers of care rose 7% from 184,855 in February 2017 to 199,260 delayed days in March 2017.
