Eligibility

You must:

Be a UK based member or fellow in good standing of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Be a consultant surgeons or a surgical trainee to apply. Preference will be given to senior surgical trainees (ST7) at the final stages of their training and looking to acquire extra skills to take their consultant appointments.
Be undertaking a period of time overseas to learn a surgical technique, procedure or treatment which you can then practise on your return to the UK to benefit NHS patients
Not have received a Ronald Raven Barbers’ Award funding before.

About the Ronald Raven Barbers’ Award

The Ronald Raven Barbers’ Award is open to Members and Fellows of The Royal College of Surgeons working in hospitals throughout the UK to undertake a period of time overseas to learn a surgical technique, procedure or treatment which you can then practise on your return to the UK, to benefit your patients in the NHS.

Awards are made competitively and may be used flexibly to support the award holder’s travel and accommodation costs, for the overseas visit described in your application form.

What’s expected from grant holders

Your grant funding should only be used for travel and accommodation costs to support the project detailed in the application form.
If there are any proposed changes to your project, supervisor (or wider circumstances) from the application you should notify us, at which point further guidance will be provided.
You should advise us if you are awarded any additional funding to support the visit.
You must remain in good standing order with your RCS England membership fees throughout the tenure of the award.

What you’ll gain from the grant

A grant of up to £2,500 that may be used flexibly to support travel and accommodation costs associated with your project overseas, for the purpose described in your application form.

How to apply

You’ll apply through our research funding portal. Register as a new user or log in, then complete the application form. Once you’re in your account, go to available grants and select Ronald Raven Barbers’ Award from the list.

The form has six sections. These cover your details, along with description, purpose and benefits of your proposed fellowship.

You will also need to submit:

Curriculum vitae.
A letter of support from a head of the department or appropriate consultant where you are currently working.
Confirmation from the Head of the unit at the Institute where you will undertake the fellowship.

What happens next

Every application is checked against the eligibility criteria. All eligible applications go through an independent peer review process

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an online interview with a selection panel chaired by the Barbers’ Company

Particular emphasis in determining the recipient of this fellowship is placed on:

CV and career progress to date,
the opportunities provided at the centre of excellence where the fellowship will be undertaken,
the innovative qualities of the skills to be learnt and how gaining such skills will be applied in the UK for the benefit for patient care.
The Barbers’ Company will advise applicants of the grant outcome in the spring.
