Appointment of new Vice Deans at October Board Meeting
30 Oct 2018
October’s meeting of the FDS Board saw the official appointment of Dr Selina Master as Senior Vice Dean and Mr Matthew Garrett as the Junior Vice Dean of the Faculty.
Outgoing Senior Vice Dean, Professor Stephen Porter reached the end of his tenure as a Vice Dean earlier this year.
Of his experience as Senior Vice Dean, Professor Porter said, “Senior Vice Dean is a highly enjoyable position as it allowed me the opportunity to better appreciate the worth and challenges of the Faculty. It also provided me the chance to bring my own experience, and skills, to help the faculty reach decisions that will enhance the opportunities for fellows and members (and candidates!) to intersect with the Faculty and the RCS.”
Professor Porter who is Institute Director and Professor of Oral Medicine of UCL Eastman Dental Institute will continue to serve on the FDS where he has been a member since 2014.
Dr Master, who has served on the FDS board for the last five years and is Vice Chair of the Faculty’s Clinical Standards Committee commented, “My journey with the Royal College first commenced when I became an examiner in 1991. I have kept and often revisit the congratulations card which my dear Mum and Dad gave me that day. Neither my parents or myself would ever have dreamed that I would be elected to Board, let alone go on to be become Senior Vice Dean. I hope it serves as a reminder to all of what can be achieved with determination, hard work and a commitment to the College and not necessarily an academic brain!
It is most certainly a great honour and privilege to be in this position, something which I do not underestimate and I acknowledge the work still to be done in my final few months on the Board of FDS.”
Mr Matthew Garrett, a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Prosthodontics) and Vice Chair of the Faculty’s Examinations Committee was welcomed into the role of Junior Vice Dean by the Board.
Mr Garrett, who was elected to the Faculty Board in 2015 said, “I am delighted to be elected to the position of Junior Vice-Dean of the Faculty. Over the coming year, I hope that I can support the Dean and Board to ensure that the Faculty continues to be the voice of dentistry to whom policy makers, the profession and public turn for advice and opinion.”
