16 Oct 2020
Faculty of Dental Surgery [“FDS”] board member, Professor Helen Rodd, has been awarded an MBE by Her Majesty the Queen in her belated Birthday Honours 2020, for her work and research on children’s oral health treatment. Professor Rodd was elected to the Faculty Board in 2018 and is Chair of the Faculty's Research committee. Her current research interests lie principally in the field of child-centred oral health research, focusing on the impact of dental and facial differences on children’s psychosocial status as well as evaluating young people's experiences of various dental conditions and treatment modalities. FDS congratulates Professor Rodd for this deserved recognition which reflect her ongoing leadership and dedication to improve children’s oral health.
On receiving this recognition in the Queen’s Honours, Professor Rodd paid tribute to colleagues in the NHS and in the research field with whom she has worked:
“I am thrilled and humbled by this recognition for my work as a paediatric dentist. But I do not work alone; I am surrounded by wonderful committed NHS and academic colleagues, and the powerhouse that is the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry. Together we strive to improve the oral health, dental experiences and wellbeing of children, and we will not stop until inequalities are addressed. Treating children and engaging them in meaningful research is a privilege and a joy and I hope my love for paediatric dentistry will continue to enthuse others too.”
