RCS press event on education and training

24 Feb 2014

The Royal College of Surgeons is one of the UK’s leading surgical training organisations and we train over 10,000 surgical trainees every year.

On Wednesday, February 26 between 10 and 11:30am, we will be inviting journalists to our world class education suite so they can see first-hand how crucial surgical training is to ensuring that the next generation of surgeons has the necessary skills to perform at the highest level.

During the morning journalists will have the opportunity to observe a practical training session on colorectal surgery in our state-of-the-art education centre. There will also be the opportunity to interview trainees on the course, take photographs and speak to senior surgeons about the current education and training landscape.

The centre, which comprises a fully equipped operating theatre, recovery area and control room, allows trainees, consultants and other medical staff to use the latest technology to practice and develop their skills and to understand the importance of surgical training to patient safety.

The College’s clinical skills unit and team skills training theatre can be combined to simulate critical incidents and major disaster scenarios such as road traffic accidents and life-threatening anaesthetic or surgical complications. The scenarios can be set up while experts observe and provide feedback to the theatre team. This will be the venue for brief presentations from senior surgeons and trainees on the latest in new learning techniques and technologies as well as an overview on current education and training surgical news issues.
