Mr Matthew Garrett takes office as new Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery

19 Jun 2020

The Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England is delighted to announce that Mr Matthew Garrett has taken office as its new Dean. He was elected to the role by the Faculty’s Board in October, and will serve a three year term to 2023.

Mr Garrett is a consultant in restorative dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital, and served as President of the British Society for Restorative Dentistry in 2017-18. He was elected to the Board of the Faculty in 2015, having previously sat as its invited representative for trainees between 2006 and 2010, and most recently served as the Faculty’s Senior Vice Dean.

Mr Garrett succeeds Professor Michael Escudier, who steps down at the end of his term of office having led the Faculty’s high profile campaigns to improve children’s and older people’s oral health. Professor Escudier is being awarded an honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in recognition of his contribution whilst Dean.

Mr Garrett said:

“It is an honour to take office as Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery. It’s a privilege to represent members in this way, and to have been elected from the Board I once was invited to sit on as a trainee representative.

“While this is an incredibly unusual time to take office, and indeed to be practicing, I believe our collegiate spirit will enable us to come through it, and I will do my best to serve all of our members over the next three years.”
