Sir Geoffrey Slaney – former RCS President dies

We are saddened to learn of the death of former RCS President Sir Geoffrey Slaney.

Sir Geoffrey had a distinguished career as a general and vascular surgeon at the University of Birmingham. He trained at the University of Birmingham Medical School and also spent time at the University of Illinois. His early career focused on inflammatory bowel disease but later became a pioneer of vascular surgery in the United Kingdom. He became Professor of Surgery in 1966 and held the prestigious Barling Chair of Surgery from 1971 until his retirement in 1984. He was a founding member of the Vascular Surgery Society.

Miss Clare Marx, President of the RCS, said: "Sir Geoffrey Slaney made an invaluable contribution to the early days of vascular surgery in the UK. He was also a life-long supporter of the College for which we owe a debt of gratitude. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Sir Geoffrey was a member of the RCS Council from 1975 to 1987, serving as President from 1982-1986.
