Sir Ian Todd, former RCS President, passes away

24 Apr 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of former RCS President Sir Ian Todd.

Sir Ian had a long and distinguished career as a colorectal surgeon at hospitals including St Bartholomew’s and St Mark’s Hospital from 1958 to 1986.

Throughout his career he nurtured an interest in developing countries, and worked in many areas teaching, lecturing and operating, especially in India and East Africa. He played a key role in the establishment and development of the overseas training scheme that provided specialist training opportunities for many young surgeons from overseas.

He was the author of two books and wrote many articles in the field of colorectal surgery. He was appointed KBE in 1989 in recognition for his services to surgery.

Miss Clare Marx, President of the Royal College of Surgeons said:

“Sir Ian Todd was a great supporter of the College and in addition to becoming President  he was a Hunterian Professor in 1953, His death marks the passing of an era for colorectal surgery and the College. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

Sir Ian was a member of the RCS Council from 1975 to 1989, serving as President from 1986-1989.
