RCS comment on Welsh government's prudent healthcare speech

16 Jan 2014

Commenting on the Welsh Government’s “prudent healthcare” announcement, Mr Colin Ferguson, Director of Professional Affairs in Wales for The Royal College of Surgeons, said:

'We would support any proposal that aims to strengthen the current healthcare structures and provide consistent, high quality care across Wales, and would welcome the opportunity to work alongside the Welsh health service to drive up standards for patients. The College has produced evidence-based guidelines to enable healthcare professionals to provide safe and effective surgical care and would warn against any attempt to restrict access to surgery on non-clinical grounds. Rather, access to treatment should be driven by need based on clinical assessment, and must not be compromised by financial pressure.’
