About this module
Orthopaedic surgery can be a complex area of practice, but it is essential knowledge for any surgical trainee. This module introduces learners to key topics, while simultaneously allowing those who are already in an orthopaedics programme to develop their knowledge further.
This module contains one or more Workplace Based Assessments (WBAs) that you are required to complete to obtain your module certificate. Please see the Format tab below for the details of these. For details on the overall module content, please see the Learning outcomes tab below.

Suitability
You can take this module as part of the PGCert in Surgery, designed for FY1-2 & CT1-2.
You can also take this module as a standalone online course at any stage of your career.
To be eligible, candidates need to have access to an Educational / Clinical Supervisor.
Learning outcomes
You will cover topics including:
- bone healing;
- classification of fractures;
- fracture management;
- compartment syndrome;
- septic arthritis;
- fracture complications;
- paediatric orthopaedics.
After completing this Orthopaedics: Acute module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the anatomy and physiology around common orthopaedic pathologies.
- Describe a fracture, using common terms including classification systems.
- Describe and explain bone repair and healing in the acute setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge, clinical reasoning and understanding of the assessment and management of acute and chronic orthopaedic patients.
- Evaluate the role of non-operative and surgical treatments for common traumatic orthopaedic conditions.
- Recognise, assess and evaluate common complications due to a traumatic or acute limb/joint problem.
Format
This is an interactive online module within the innovative RCS e-learning platform. This format means you can study using any device, whenever and wherever it suits you.
This module requires the completion of 3 work place based assessments (WBA). It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the capacity to complete the WBAs and that they are within your scope of practice in order to complete the module. WBAs cannot be missed or replaced with alternative activities. You will need to have an appropriate supervisor to complete these.

- Write a reflective passage on the management of a patient you have seen with an ankle fracture, either in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

- Complete a consent form for a Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) Fixation.

- Write a reflective passage on the management of a patient you have seen with a shoulder dislocation, either in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
For more information on WBAs, please consult the ISCP website. If you do not have an Assigned Educational Supervisor (AES) you can use the ISCP guidance to find a suitable alternative, for example within the Case Based Discussion guidance.
