This module will enable you to learn how electrosurgery can make surgery safer for the patient, and more efficient for you. Through topics from basic principles, applications and hazards, you will understand how electrosurgery can be incorporated into your surgical practice.

Learning Outcomes
You will cover topics including:
- course introduction;
- history and basic principles;
- surgical techniques;
- patient plate electrodes;
- complications and safe practice;
- minimal access surgery.
After completing this Energy in Surgery module, you will be able to:
- Describe the principles of electrosurgery and the difference between bipolar and monopolar circuits, and cautery;
- define how to apply the four basic clinical techniques of monopolar circuits in practice;
- Identify why complications occur in electrosurgery and how to avoid them.
Format
This is an interactive online module within the innovative RCS England e-learning platform. This format means you can study using any device, whenever and wherever it suits you.
This module does not contain any WBAs and therefore the need for an Educational/Clinical Supervisor is not essential, but we would recommend that your progress with the module would benefit from having someone to discuss the content with.
