About the exam
Part B of the Intercollegiate MRCS is an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). It tests:
- anatomy and surgical pathology
- applied surgical science and critical care
- clinical and procedural skills
- communication skills

Practice course: Practice MRCS OSCE is a virtual classroom led by examiners that will give you the opportunity to experience the anatomy stations on the MRCS Part B exam.

Eligibility
To be eligible to sit the MRCS exam, you must hold a medical degree that is acceptable to the UK General Medical Council (GMC) for full or provisional registration or to the Medical Council in Ireland for full or temporary registration.
First time applicants whose names do not appear on the registers of the GMC or Medical Council (Ireland) must submit their original certificate (or an authenticated copy) of a medical degree acceptable to the councils of the four colleges.

Withdrawal and refund policy
If you wish to withdraw from the exam, you may or may not be entitled to a full or partial refund according to the guidelines outlined in our refund policy. (Please note, we do not offer transfers).
Please familiarise yourself with this policy before applying for an exam seat to ensure a smooth and easy withdrawal process.

Exam format
Part B consists of an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). The OSCE consists of 17 examined stations each of 9 minutes duration.
These stations will examine the following broad content areas:
- applied knowledge: consisting of anatomy, surgical pathology, applied surgical science and critical care
- applied skills: consisting of communication skills in giving and receiving information, history taking and clinical & procedural skills
Syllabus
In addition to the four broad content areas examined in the OSCE (anatomy, surgical pathology, applied surgical science, critical care), four domains have been identified which encompass the knowledge, skills, competencies and professional characteristics of the competent surgeon. These domains map to the GMC’s Good Medical Practice and are assessed in the OSCE:
1. The duties of a doctor registered with the GMC
Patients must be able to trust doctors with their lives and health. To justify that trust
you must show respect for human life and make sure your practice meets the standards
expected of you in four domains.
2. Knowledge, skills and performance
- Make the care of your patient your first concern.
- Provide a good standard of practice and care.
- Keep your professional knowledge and skills up to date.
- Recognise and work within the limits of your competence.
3. Safety and quality

Take prompt action if you think that patient safety, dignity or comfort is being
compromised. - Protect and promote the health of patients and the public.
- Communication, partnership and teamwork
- Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity.
- Treat patients politely and considerately.
- Respect patients’ right to confidentiality.
- Work in partnership with patients.
- Listen to, and respond to, their concerns and preferences.
- Give patients the information they want or need in a way they can understand.
- Respect patients’ right to reach decisions with you about their treatment
and care. - Support patients in caring for themselves to improve and maintain their health.
- Work with colleagues in the ways that best serve patients’ interests.
4. Maintaining trust
- Be honest and open and act with integrity.
- Never discriminate unfairly against patients or colleagues.
- Never abuse your patients’ trust in you or the public’s trust in the profession.
- You are personally accountable for your professional practice and must always be
- prepared to justify your decisions and actions.

Important notice regarding fees for candidates sitting examinations in India
Effective for all exams taking place from 1st July
2025, please be informed that an additional 18% tax will be applied to
examination fees for candidates sitting the examinations in India. This tax is
mandated by local Indian tax regulations and is not determined by the College.

Candidates who did not receive a confirmation email will not be able to book this exam. Deadline for documentation: 7 March 2025 | Exam date range: 9 - 16 July 2025. All documentation must be scanned and emailed to SurgicalEligibility@rcseng.ac.uk once you receive a confirmation email of your place. Postal copies will not be accepted. Failure to provide the required eligibility evidence within the given time frame will result in withdrawal without a refund.

Please note that you will need to register your interest to book the MRCS Part B OSCE in Cairo (5–9 Nov 2025) and Alexandria (11–13 Nov 2025). You will be able to register your interest on Eventbrite at 9am on Monday 24 March (UK time). Upon registration, you will be added to the "Expression of interest" list and contacted by email to confirm whether you can complete the booking and secure your place. Exam date range: 5 - 13 November 2025
Please be aware that registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. If your preferred location is fully booked, candidates will be offered the other location. First preference may not always be available.
