Overview

Hear from some of the most influential women in surgery, technology and business as they share their practical advice on how to climb the surgical career ladder whilst helping others to do the same. We will be announcing some very exciting speakers and sessions over the coming weeks - watch this space.

Who should attend?

This event is open to all career grades and specialties. If you're interested in receiving practical advice, hearing real-life stories and networking with a range of inspirational women, this is the event for you.

We welcome you to bring babies along to the event and the main conference room. There will be a quiet area outside the conference room and an additional room where the event will be live-streamed if you need to pop out now and then. Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide creche facilities but please do inform us of any requirements and we will try to cater to them. 

Sessions that will be included:

• setting personal objectives and reaching your goals;
• personal development and work life balance;
• bringing others along with you;
• setting up mentoring networks.

Keynote speaker

Nabila Tejpar is the 2017 British Rally Ladies Champion with a passion for motor sport inherited and inspired by her father. She has a degree in International Business, Entrepreneurship and Management from the Kogod School of Business and has been a rally driver since 2015 having got her first rally car at the age of 15. Nabila will be sharing her experiences of reaching her personal and professional goals in the highly competitive, high risk and exciting field of motor sport. 

Speakers and Chairs 

Farah Bhatti

Farah is a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon in Swansea. She read medicine at Somerville College, Oxford and Jesus College Cambridge and has an MD in transplantation. Farah is passionate about teaching and training. She teaches at Swansea University Medical School, where she is the lead for both Careers and Equality and Diversity. Specialty roles at national level include being an examiner for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board and a panel member for National Recruitment into Cardiothoracic Surgery. Professor Bhatti has been Chair of Women in Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons since 2016 and was elected to RCS Council in 2018.

Stella Vig

Stella is a consultant vascular and general surgeon at Croydon University Hospital. She undertook research culminating in an MCh at St George’s Hospital, London. She was appointed as a consultant in 2006. She has been the Foundation Programme Director at Croydon University Hospital for 10 years. Stella was awarded the NHS Leadership Academy London Mentor of the Year in 2015. She was also named as one of the NHS Women of the Year. She co-chairs the London Diabetic Foot Network within the Diabetes Strategic Clinical Network and is a trustee for the College of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. She was elected to RCS Council in 2016.

Michael Escudier

Michael is the Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and RCS Council Emerging Leaders champion. He is the Reader in Oral Medicine and Director of Assessment at King’s College London Dental Institute and Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Having qualified in dentistry from Guy’s Hospital in 1985 and in medicine from St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1992 he returned to Guy’s in 1994 and obtained his Fellowship in 1998. On completion of higher training he was appointed Honorary Consultant in Oral Medicine in 2003, becoming a clinical lead and academic head in 2010. He has extensive experience in teaching within both the undergraduate and postgraduate sector. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has received a King’s College Teaching Fellowship (2012) and a Mature Educator Award (2012) from the Association of Dental Educators of Europe. He specialises in teaching the medical related areas of dentistry and also has a particular interest in assessment practice. He Chaired the MJDF examination from 2010-13. His main research foci are salivary gland disease, in which he completed an MD on the minimally invasive management of calculi, and orofacial granulomatosis. 

Fiona Myint

Fiona is a consultant vascular and general surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust as well as an RCS Council member. Other positions Fiona holds include Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at UCL, Examiner for the MRCS, College Assessor (sitting on AAC panels) and a GMC Associate (sitting on appeals panels for registration and certification). Her main interest is in education, having gained a Master in Clinical Education and she has previously been an SAC member for General Surgery, and Programme Director for General Surgery and for Core Surgery.

We are also delighted to be being joined by Laura Gartshore from the RCS Emerging Leaders programme, Felicity Meyer, RCS Flexible Working Advisor and Toni Ardolino from the RCS WinS forum. More details and speaker announcements to follow.
