Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (ENT) OSCE

The MRCS (ENT) OSCE is an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), held over two days. The 'written stations' are delivered via online remote examination and the 'clinical stations' are delivered in person.

The MRCS (ENT) OSCE exam forms the second part of the examination pathway leading to the award of the Intercollegiate MRCS (ENT).


ICBSE and the four Surgical Royal Colleges of the United Kingdom and in Ireland can confirm that the DO-HNS Part 1 (MCQ) exam has now been discontinued and that the DO-HNS Part 2 (OSCE) exam has been renamed the MRCS (ENT) OSCE. ICBSE announcement to MRCS (ENT) OSCE candidates: MRCS (ENT) exam in February 2026

Applications for the exam will open for all Colleges on Thursday 20 November 2025, with the closing date for applications set for Thursday 4 December 2025.

Please note that the total number of candidates who can register across the Colleges to sit the exam will be capped at 250. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Colleges may close applications prior to the advertised closing date if they reach capacity.

Transition plan

Following the February 2026 diet, there will be no further opportunity to sit or resit the MRCS (ENT). After this, candidates wishing to enter Higher Surgical Training in ENT will be required to successfully complete the MRCS Part B as standard. Candidates may choose to transition to the MRCS Part B at any time and are not required to sit the final MRCS (ENT) OSCE.

The eligibility of candidates to enter Higher Surgical Training in ENT after successfully completing the MRCS Part B has been confirmed by the Specialty Advisory Committee in ENT.

Eligibility

Candidates must have passed MRCS Part A in order to apply for the MRCS (ENT) OSCE exam.

Exam format

The MRCS (ENT) OSCE comprises of up to 28 active bays including several clinical bays where candidates will be required to examine actors. Currently held over two days, the 'written stations' are delivered via online remote examination on 'day 1' and the 'clinical stations' are delivered in person on 'day 2'.

Upcoming Exam Dates


For the clinical stations, candidates will be scheduled to attend the exam on one day only. The exams department are unable to accept requests for a specific exam date, candidates should therefore ensure they are available for all dates before applying.
