About this module

This module considers the anatomical features and surgical approaches treating disorders of the sacrococcygeal area, rectum and anus. The sessions cover anorectal abscesses and fissures, pilonidal disease, haemorrhoids and anal fissures. Participants will learn how patients presenting with these conditions are assessed and the range of non-surgical and surgical treatments commonly undertaken. Each module is furnished with appropriate images and diagrams to help make this learning both clear and memorable.

Learning Outcomes

The following topics are covered in the module:

  • Anorectal abscess and fistula
  • Pilonidal disease
  • Haemorrhoids
  • Anal fissure

At the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the anatomical features of the anal canal and rectum
  • Describe the aetiology of each condition
  • Explain how anorectal abscesses and fissures, pilonidal disease, haemorrhoids and anal fissures are diagnosed
  • Identify the appropriate non-surgical and surgical treatments.

Format

This is an interactive online module within the RCS England e-learning platform. Following the four main e-learning sessions, participants must complete an assessment session consisting of 18 multiple choice questions. You must achieve at least 75% on this assessment to receive your certificate.

You will have access to this module for 6 months, which you can also extend.
