Locum Appointments
There are two types of locum appointments: Locum for service (LAS) and Locum for training (LAT).
If you are not fully registered with the GDC you can only apply for LAT posts. Any period spent as a locum will count towards the total period of 1826 days on temporary registration. This entitlement ends five years after your first temporary registration application. The minimum period for which temporary registration is granted for a locum appointment is 180 days and a maximum period of 365 days per application.
LAS posts, or work in primary care or private hospitals may not be regarded as acceptable training experience and are not eligible for temporary registration.
If you already hold a temporary registration directive for another post, you will need to contact the GDC before taking up any locum appointment and a new directive from the GDC for the locum post.
As with all posts in the UK, appointments are made in open competition. The GDC, the British Dental Association (BDA) and the British Council cannot assist dentists in obtaining employment or training posts in the UK.
