The award is intended to celebrate students who have been involved in a project and made an exceptional contribution, developed an outstanding initiative or gone the extra mile. Applicants should demonstrate excellence and endeavour beyond the requirements of the curriculum.

The Undergraduate Award was created in line with our strategy to develop the confidence, skills and knowledge of our members at all career stages and to continue to embrace diversity and inspire professionals of the future.

Meet our 2024 FDS Undergraduate Prize Award winner:

Florence Mai

Our FDS Undergraduate Award winner, Florence Mai, showcased exceptional innovation through her project, Nattüra. Florence's dental initiative focused on developing a sustainable toothpaste tablet that's beneficial for both your teeth and the planet.

'I’m currently an academic foundation dentist in South London, having graduated from Barts and The London in 2024. My role offers a great balance of general practice, hospital experience, study days and academic work focused on sustainable dentistry. Though the learning curve from dental school has been challenging, I’m enjoying the new experiences and the growth that comes with being a dentist.

I’m excited to share that after five years of hard work, Nattüra has reached its Q2 milestones and we’ve been invited to present our patent-pending formula at Boots HQ. Nattüra is also rebranding with industry-leading consultants with 100% biodegradable packaging and ingredients.

I’m also conducting research on sustainability in dental education and hospitals, and it’s incredibly rewarding to combine my love for sustainability, research, and business in my career. I’m grateful that the FDS Undergraduate Award has recognised this and help spread awareness of the impact of dentistry and oral care products on our environment.'

Congratulations to our 2024 runners-up and all finalists from UK dental schools. Hear more about their initiatives here.
