WinSpire School Outreach Initiative

As of 2024, only 16.9% of consultant surgeons in the UK are female, but we're dedicated to changing that.

The WinSpire School Outreach Initiative, led by the Women in Surgery (WinS) Forum at RCS England, connects women in surgery with schools across the UK to inspire young people to consider a career in surgery. By volunteering, you become a role model within surgery, championing diversity in perceptions of who can become a surgeon.

The initiative aims to:

  • increase awareness of surgical careers among school students;
  • challenge outdated perceptions of who can become a surgeon;
  • provide women role models in surgery to inspire the next generation.

As a volunteer, you’ll visit a local school (or more than one if you want!) to speak about your experiences as a woman in surgery or medical student, share different pathways into medicine and answer students’ questions. You don’t need prior outreach experience—we'll provide the resources you need to contact schools and set up your talk.

Women in Surgery Forum member gives a talk to school students

Why should you volunteer?

  • many students, particularly young women, have never met a female surgeon. Your story could be the spark that encourages them to pursue surgery;
  • help break down stereotypes and promote inclusivity in the profession;
  • improve your confidence in public speaking and outreach;
  • receive a certificate of participation for your portfolio.

What’s involved?

  • organise a visit to a local state school (or attend virtually if needed) to give a short talk on being a surgeon;
  • deliver a pre-prepared slideshow provided by RCS England (please do personalise it with your own experiences);
  • answer student questions and offer insights into surgical careers;
  • sessions can be standalone or part of a school careers fair.

Eligibility

Each volunteer should be:

  • female, female-identifying or non-binary;
  • a surgeon or medical student with an interest in surgery;
  • a member of the WinS Network.
