New Consultants

Congratulations on having obtained your first consultant post. You will now be in charge of a clinical team and personally responsible for the entire care pathway of patients admitted under your care.

There are many facets to working as a consultant, and you will now need to get used to managing not just your patients’ care but also paperwork, managerial and teaching responsibility.

Initially, you will probably want to focus on the immediate concerns of starting work as a consultant. Your Trust should be able to provide you with information on any procedures and protocols you should follow, and you might also like to seek information from colleagues within the department.

The RCS runs regular events addressing the needs of surgeons at different stages of their senior careers, including new consultants. Details of these can be found in the RCS newsletter and the events listings as they are arranged.
